Superdelegate convention sends wrong idea

Thu Mar 27, 2008 at 07:15:00 AM PDT

I think the idea of a superdelegate convention sends the wrong idea, the truth maybe, but the wrong picture to the rest of the world. It says, you can have all the primaries you want, but the party bigwigs are going to get together afterwards, and decide who the nominee is. I believe individual endoresements now, over the next few weeks, is a much better solution.

The idea of superdelegates gathering anywhere, even at the convention, is a bad idea. This year, of all years, it is imperative we look united and get behind our candidate, and that the candidate is the people's choice.
.

A month of talkingheads trying to outdo themselves day after day, and keeping controversary stirred up over this, is going to hurt our chances in the fall. Each side is going to start digging in their heels a little more each day.

I think a message from Howard, Al, and Nancy that superdelegates need to go ahead and publicly endorse a candidate now, and put this indecision in the media to rest sends a much better visual of individual decisons than  groupspeak at a convention.

Enough time has elapsed to see how the Wright issue is going to playout.  Polls are starting to come out to show how that is going to effect Obama.  Delegates can see how things are going to run. They need to make their decision and come public with it.

This can be decided by Pennsylvania and North Carolina. A month of delegates endorsing should make this a done deal.
Forget special delegate conventions. Just.. endorse..now.

  •  I agree. It is past time for supers to be able (0+ / 0-)

to decide which of the two candidates they prefer.  We have had all but what, 10 contests?  We've had 20 debates.

  •  If a super-delegate convention.. (0+ / 0-)

... is the worst thing that happens in this race, we should be so lucky. The fact is we're at the point of no return. We have to make some dicey decisions in order to still win the White House in November.

And the undeclared SDs have already shown themselves completely lacking in spine so we will force them to have a convention. That's the only way to end this travesty.

    •  I sort of agree that (0+ / 0-)

if that's what it takes to get them to make up their minds before the convention, it's better than them dithering and handwringing through the summer, but I doubt that will happen.

Which leads me to the conclusion that rather than conniving and reveling in their power, most superdelegates don't actually want to be in the position of deciding the nomination. There's a lot of responsibility to it, plus they know that it's unavoidable that some large group will be pissed off. I think that's why a lot of them want to wait until the voting is over, so that there are fewer reasons to cry foul or to say they didn't give everyone every possible chance to make their case.

  •  We have a Convention (0+ / 0-)

Why do we need another one?  Yeah, I know that lots of people here have problems with political sphincter control.

  •  The Ideal Might Be . . . (0+ / 0-)

. . . For enough supers to endorse before NC so that the results of that state send BHO over the top.  It would be great if the supers come out now, but with the final result turning on a primary vote.

That said, if it's June and it's still not over, a superdelegate convention is preferable to waiting until August.

  •  It might give them cover (0+ / 0-)

My feeling is that a number of delegates would have a hard time changing their minds, but a convention might allow them to come together as a group and make a decision.  I am not sure if the number of uncommitted delegates are enough to cinch it, but I still see some merit to a convention.  JMHO This might result in HRC winning, but at least there woudl be time before the election to make adjustments and deal with the outcome.  I would probably sit this election out, but maybe not.  Either way, it is time for this to end.
